It’s fingers crossed that it will be 4th time lucky when Reds 2s make the trip to Truro this Saturday. Three previous games between the two sides have had to be postponed due to the wet weather.
The Reds are currently one place and one point behind Truro in the table but they do have a game in hand. The Reds last outing saw a 40-38 win over visiting Newton Abbot.
Truro made the trip to Barnstaple 2’s last week at the same time as the Reds 1st XV were on the next pitch against the Devon side’s first team. They lost that one 38-17.
Truro are Cornwall’s oldest club, founded in 1871. The following year they entertained a side from St Austell in what was probably the very first rugby game in Cornwall between two established clubs. Truro, like many of those early clubs, fell into abeyance more than once.
Truro are also our oldest opponents. We first played a Truro side away on the Truro cricket ground on 22 Jan1876 in what would have been a 20 a side game, Truro winning by the only goal of the match. A month later Truro visited Redruth for what was probably our very first home match against another club, played on the Brewery Field. Regrettably, no one seems to have noted the score.
