After yet another game falling foul of the wet weather last week, Redruth 2s try again this coming Saturday with a home match against Newton Abbot. Their visitors are just one place and two points below the Reds who are in 7th place in the table.
The away match back in November saw a very young Redruth side, devoid of any forward replacements, go down to a 62-26 defeat at Kingsteignton although they did have the consolation of a try bonus point to bring home.
Redruth first played the Devon side back in the 1892/93 season but it was a later fixture that sparked a major row between not just the clubs but also the Devon and Cornwall Rugby Unions. In a match at Newton in 1905, the Redruth captain, Fred Daniel, refused to give the referee the name of a player who the official claimed had called him a cheat. Daniel then led most of the Reds team off the field although they returned to finish the game.
After the CRFU decided to take no action, the Devon RFU complained to the RFU who overruled Cornwall. Fred Daniel was suspended for a month while Nick Rich, the player identified as the person who insulted the referee, was banned for the rest of the season.
Referee: Craig Goulding.
