Reds stay 3rd after Ashes success.

The Reds were full value for their win as they dominated possession and field position for much of this match. They were held back greatly in the first 40 when their lineout completely misfired, despite this they had a comfortable lead at halftime and in the 2nd, period were able to draw further clear to take the points.

The monsoon like rain of Friday and overnight had given way to a dry day and the very strong cross -field wind had done wonders to provide decent underfoot conditions.
The Reds got proceedings underway and were immediately on the attack. The Reds dominated early on with the visitors giving away too many penalties, but the hosts efforts were hampered as they conspired to lose their first four lineouts for a variety of reasons. After 14 minutes after yet another Saltash penalty the Reds went for goal and Nat Dart judged the kick well in wind to put the Reds 3 points up. The Reds continued the good play and a late hit on Richard Brown gave Dart another penalty opportunity from 45 metres but this attempt fell just short. The Reds were soon back in the visitors 22 with a 5-metre attacking lineout courtesy of an Adan Hall 50:22. The lineout went astray again but the Reds had a 5-metre scrum and Finn Wolstencroft broke away but was held up over the line. The pressure continued with yet another 5-metre lineout but yet again confusion in the Reds ranks gave the Ashes a freekick to clear. From an Ashes lineout in their own half they ran the ball, a speculative grubber found the feet of Lewis Bostock who dribbled the ball on, regathered and went in under the posts for a converted try on 28 minutes to put the Reds 10 points clear. Straight from the kick-off the Reds ran the ball back and great runs from Oli Wells and Luke Johnson allowed Dart the space to find a great touch 10 metres from the Ashes line. The Reds wone the ball but knocked on with the line in site. Play was exclusively in the visitor’s half and after yet another Saltash penalty Ryan Cruickshanks was shown the yellow card. The Reds immediately made the Ashes pay, the penalty went to 15 metres and the Reds lineout did not let them down again and they mauled overpowerfully for an unconverted try for Brown. The Ashes despite being under the cosh for the majority of the match suddenly hit back, from their own half they kicked deep, a wicked bounce found a Saltash player and after a few phases they were over in the Piggy Lane corner for a Lewis Woolaway try. With the last kick of the half Jack Pritchard struck a fantastic conversion into the wind.
Half-time: Redruth 15 – 7 Saltash

Straight from the restart Wells stormed downfield and took play to the edge of the Ashes 22, yet another penalty was conceded and the Reds had a 5-metre lineout. After a dire first 40 from the edges where they conspired to lose 8 lineouts out of 11 this time there was no mistake and the driving maul was over for a Wolstencroft try that went unconverted. The Ashes now put some rugby together and forced a penalty deep in the Reds half that went to 8 metres out, the maul was stopped and then the dart down the narrow side ended up in touch allowing the Reds to clear. From the lineout on the 22 the Ashes broke through the Reds lines but in the act of touching down they knocked-on. A monster Redruth scrum seemed to have turned over the visitor’s scrum but the penalty went against the home side. Two silly penalties now gifted the visitors field position in the Reds 22 but a penalty allowed the home side to clear. The now totally dominate Redruth scrum got them back on the front foot and the Ashes faced a lineout in the 22. The maul was stopped just short but at the expense of a penalty. The Reds tapped and soon after Wells was over for a converted try to put the Reds 20 points up on 61 minutes. The Reds soon seemed to have scored another, from a lineout on the 22 they put together a great bit of play. A superb line from Lewis Wills took play to 10 metres and two quick phases seemed to have the Reds over in the corner but the last pass was adjudged forward. From a penalty on around halfway the Ashes ran the ball, some good phase play ended with an unconverted try in the scoreboard corner with 9 minutes remaining. Any thoughts of a late fight back were soon put too bed, from a lineout on the 10-metre line the Reds put together a great series of phases which ended with Rhys Bowery going over in the corner for a try superbly converted by Dart. There was just time for the Ashes to score a consolation try after running a penalty from the Reds 22. The match ended soon after without any further scores.

The Reds will be delighted with the 5 points that keeps them in 3rd place with a game in hand. The Reds will be especially pleased in the way they corrected their dysfunctional lineout during the halftime break. Next Saturday the Reds travel to St.Ives to take on the Hakes who currently sit in 4th place just 5 points behind the Reds.
