Match Preview

Saturday will be day of celebration for the 2's after their title clinching win up at Saltash last Saturday by 26-20. It was a match worthy of a decider with the result in doubt right up to the final whistle. Both sides scored 4 tries and it was only the 3 Redruth conversions that separated the two teams. Saltash spent the last 5 mins in the Reds 22 but determined defence kept them at bay with the young Reds side keeping their nerve and composure. There can be no doubt that Saltash are a team that deserves promotion to a higher level and they can consider themselves unlucky having finished a close 2nd two years running. If you have never been they have a nice ground with a clubhouse alongside the pitch which makes for a convivial atmosphere, although as a few Reds supporters found out its a long walk from the train station!
It was great to see the supporters travel in such good numbers to support the players and we hope you will all be there on Saturday to see them lift the trophy.
The commitment the players have shown this season has been fantastic with good numbers at training and the 'one club not one team' approach of Redruth RFC has certainly paid dividends. Two typical examples of this commitment were shown on Saturday, Harry Andrewartha drove down from Cardiff to play and Matt Bowden drove up to the match with his wife almost due with their latest offspring! Testament should also be given to the clubs player development as most of the squad has been drawn from the colts teams of the last 3-4 years which is great to see. A mention should also be made to the Team Managers and Coaches who have supported the boys throughout the season. But before all that we have a match against St.Just on Saturday with at 2.30pm kick-off.

So far St.Just are having a decent season and have won 10 of their 19 matches having had a tough time of it with the weather and ended up a couple of games behind schedule. Probably their best win was a 17-0 away win at St.Austell against the 'Sinners'. Last time out they lost disappointingly for them 25-10 away to Bodmin. This all leaves the men from the far west in 6th place on 47 points with a -42 points difference. If you get a chance to catch one of their home fixtures you are guaranteed a good afternoon out as the St.Just clubhouse is renowned for having one of the best atmospheres in Cornish rugby. Back in November the Reds won the encounter at St.Just by 56-19.

After last Saturdays heroics the Reds will be keen to end the league season with a 100% win record and 5 points would see them reach a total of 109. At present they have only dropped 1 point this season when failing to get a 4 try bonus point away at 3rd place Perranporth on a pretty horrible day, on reflection though the narrow win earned that day has proved vital.

At present the Reds leading scorer Dean Wills is also the leagues leading scorer with 291 points and he is also the leagues leading try scorer with 17, Mike Allen (who is the leagues second highest try scorer) is not far behind on 16. As a team the 2's have scored 1033 points at an average of 54 per game.
