On Saturday the 2's are on the road again as they travel to Helston RFC, playing the match postponed earlier in the season, in a 'Counties 2 Tribute Cornwall' league match with a 2.30pm kick-off.
Bodmin play their rugby at the King George V Playing Field and have 2 pitches and a very nice clubhouse. They run a mini-junior section and also have a Woman's team. The club was formed as recently as 1965 and in the 80's won several Cornwall junior Cups. In 1996 the club qualified for the final of the Pilkington Shield (now the Powergen Vase), which is some achievement for a small (or any) club as it was the largest club rugby competition in the world, with 501 teams competing. They eventually lost at Twickenham on the 4 May 1996, against Medicals RFC (16–6) from Newcastle.
This season is going quite well for Helston and they have won 5 of their 9 outings. This leaves them in 6th place on 25 points. Their top try score is Finlay Holding (No.8) with 4 and their top points scorer is James Elliott (Fly-Half)with 59.
The Redruth 2nds continued their winning ways last Saturday with an impressive 100-5 home win against Bodmin. This keeps up their 100% record win and maximum point record and leaves them in 2nd place on 45 points, 5 behind leaders Saltash.
At present their leading scorer Dean Wills is also the leagues leading scorer with, altogether now, 180 points and Jayden Oakes is the leagues highest try scorer with 11. Jayden could have at least 2 more tries as last week against Bodmin he passed to others with the line at his mercy on two occasions in what some described as good teamwork but other harsher critics had down as a clear case of 'Jug Avoidance'!
Date for your diary: The big showdown against league leaders Saltash is on December 2nd, be there to support the young Reds.
Referee: Aidan Taylor.
Look out for team news on Friday.
