This was a match in which both teams had chances to win but in the end a draw was probably the correct result. It was the nerveless boot of Redruth's Craig 'Eggy' Williams that slotted a penalty with time running out to draw the match.
On a beautiful sunny and calm day it was Redruth who were immediately on the attack and who dominated the early phases of the match. Three times they were thwarted within touching distance of the line with Saltash defending with determination but also conceding penalties. On 10 mins Saltash got a team Yellow Card for persistent offending. The scrums were going well for the Reds and they opted to scrum a 5 metre penalty. Although the scrum broke up in a bit of a mess No.8 Shaun Buzza was able to pick up and dive over the line for a converted try.
A period of Saltash pressure was repelled by the Reds with the pressure being relived with Saltash being held up over the line. A dropped ball in midfield was hacked on by Saltash but Luke Barnes, playing at openside, showed great speed to be first to the ball in the shadow of the Reds line, good footwork saw him run out to the 22 but Saltash were able to force a penalty at the breakdown. A few minutes later Saltash were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which they opted to kick to make the score 7-3 to Redruth on 29 mins.
Suddenly from nowhere Saltash cut loose, running the ball from their own half the Saltash right wing Morton made great ground and was able to link up with the support runners for a try wide out that was unconverted to put Saltash ahead with the break looming. Crucially Redruth were able to sustain another attack before half-time with multiple phases in the Saltash 22, a Redruth knock-on led to a scrum but the Redruth 8 were able to force a penalty which Adam Hall stroked over with the last kick of the half.
Half-Time: Redruth 10 - 8 Saltash
In the early phases of the 2nd half both sides had chances to score but the tackling was superb from both sides as the defences held sway.
A storming run from a Saltash forward took him clear with only the full-back to beat, but a great tackle from Williams stopped him in his tracks, unfortunately from the next play Williams was Yellow Carded for a clear penalty infringement. Saltash kicked the goal to go back in front. The Reds were able to see out the 10 min of the Yellow Card without conceding further and with Williams just back on the pitch Saltash conceded a penalty for back-chat and Williams made no mistake from 30 metres. A few minutes later Redruth extended their lead, a loose Saltash clearance was pounced upon and the Reds spun the ball first right then left to go over wide out for a Owen Wildgoose try well converted by Williams. 20-11 to Redruth on 65 mins. Saltash though were not beaten and came storming back, suddenly the dominant Redruth scrum was struggling and Saltash after a period of pressure were able to go over in Piggy Lane corner for an unconverted try. Saltash were immediately on the attack again and with a Redruth player lying on the floor injured Saltash took full advantage of the extra man to go over for a converted try to put them 20-23 up with only minutes left. Redruth were behind but not beaten and showing great spirit were able to take play into the Saltash 22 and started to build the phases. The pressure told and Saltash conceded a penalty and then a Yellow Card for back-chat. As described above Williams made no mistake to tie the match. A few minutes late the whistle went for no side to end a pulsating match.
A great match with both teams putting on a show for the large crowd who had turned out to watch.
