Match cancelled, Newquay Hornets unable to raise a side.

It is the turn of Redruth 2s for a pre-season friendly when they entertain Newquay Hornets at the Rec on Wednesday evening. The side are being forced to wait another four weeks for their first league game of the season due to the RFU’s decision to delay the start of the season for clubs below National League level, over concern about hard pitches.

Hornets currently play in Counties 2 Cornwall, one league below Reds 2. Last season the Hornets finished in 7th place winning 10 of their 20 games.

The club began life back in 1933 simply named ‘Hornets’ and were based at St Austell, moving across Cornwall to Newquay in the mid-1950s when they could no longer find a ground in the St Austell area. They found themselves playing in a number of different places including St Columb Minor recreation ground fetching up at their current home in 1971

One of their earlier games against Redruth 2s, then known as Redruth Reserves, was in April 1957 when, to the astonishment of many, including themselves, they ended Redruth’s 31 match winning record. Having been a junior club for many years the CRFU granted them senior club status in season 1965/66.

In 1973 a new player named Nick Preston arrived who would eventually move to Nottingham and then become Newquay Hornets’ first England international. He would be followed by Richard Keast, later to star for Redruth, who played for England U18 and U20 and Steve Taylor who played for England Colts.
