The Reds were full value for their win against a Camborne side that defended their line with great determination. The Reds had much the better of the territory but may feel they failed to turn pressure into points on too many occasions. The match ended in some confusion when in the last 10 minutes the Reds received two yellow cards. Camborne piled on the pressure and narrowed the difference to 8 points with around 4 minutes remaining. Camborne looked for a quick try on the restart but the Reds managed to keep them at arm’s length. Running the ball from around halfway Camborne knocked-on and Dean Wills scooped up the ball and ran in under the posts to seal the Reds win, or so we thought. It turned out that Referee had blown the whistle to end the game just before Wills went on his run. It made no difference and the Reds 2nds were delighted to lift the Duchy Cup which their excellent season deserved.
On a dry day that had turned cloudy it was Camborne who got proceedings underway playing down the slope wind with the advantage of a stiff diagonal breeze. The Reds had an early opportunity with a lineout in the 22 but Camborne stole the ball to clear the danger. An early injury blow saw Reds Captain Ashley Hosking leave the field on 5 minutes being replaced by Connor Chesterfield. The Reds however soon went ahead, from a lineout on halfway the Reds ran the ball and Noah Clifford made a clean break through the middle, the ball was recycled quickly and Lewis Wills showed good pace to go over for an unconverted try on 12 minutes. It wasn’t long before the Reds went further ahead. The Reds had numerous pick and goes on the Camborne line but could not get over. Finally they won a penalty with Camborne on a warning for repeated high tackles. The Reds opted to go for the 5 metre line out, the maul was held but the Reds kept up the pressure and a quick pass out to Chesterfield saw the winger show good strength to wriggle his way over. This time Wills made no mistake with the conversion to put the Reds 12 points clear. Any thoughts that the Reds could run away with the game were soon put to bed. Camborne from a scrum some 30 metres out launched a series of attacks that the Reds did well to defend, but only at the cost of a penalty for offside. Camborne took a quick tap-and –go and caught the Reds defence napping to go over for a converted try on 23 minutes. The remainder of the half went by without further scores with at times the match resembling a sevens game as both teams attacked from deep giving the large crowd some great entertainment. The Reds would have been disappointed in not being further ahead but with the wind and slope advantage they went into the second period with confidence.
Halftime: Redruth 12 – 7 Camborne
The second period turned into a very stop start affair with a lot of injury stoppages which made keeping track of the timings of scores somewhat of a challenge!
The Reds were immediately on the attack pinning Camborne into their 22 but a combination of knock-ons and good defence held them at bay. The pressure told though and Wills popped over a penalty on 46 minutes to increase the Reds lead to 8 points. The match continued to be played in Camborne territory but the Reds could not add to their tally and Wills missed a long range penalty attempt on 53 minutes. Camborne now launched a good attack in the Reds half with a number of phases around the Reds 22, they looked to have a chance with an overlap but a great tackle by Dean Wills forced the knock-on. Further Camborne pressure ended on the 22 with the attacked being forced into touch. The Reds secured the ball and suddenly Kaiden Carne was away and clear and made some 50 metres deep into the Camborne half, the Reds were on hand to secure quick ball and Wills put in a crosskick well gathered by Ben Rosevear who showed good footwork to elude the defence for the Reds third try. Wills converted to put the Reds 15 points clear with less than a quarter of the match remaining. A period of midfield action followed as the Reds looked to see out time. A good Camborne attack in the Reds 22 ended in strange circumstances, just when Town were threatening to score Jamie Murray intercepted and was immediately high tackled for a Reds penalty. For reasons that were not clear at the time Fin Wolstencroft was shown a yellow card but the Reds kept the penalty. With the Reds down to 14 and about 10 minutes remaining Camborne were reenergised and dominated possession for the remainder of the match. The Reds though were defending well but things for worse a few minutes later when, on the advice of the Assistant Referee, Luke Young received a yellow card for a high tackle to reduce the Reds to 13. Camborne piled on the pressure and eventually forced a score with a few minutes left on the clock. Camborne still needed two scores however and the match ended without any further scores besides the aforementioned confusion. Well done to both sides on providing such an entertaining final.
