It proved to be unlucky thirteen as the Reds chased their 13th away win of the season and the faint hope of promotion.
After taking the lead after 4 minutes Redruth were ahead for almost an hour when two quick fire tries for the Lions saw them take a five point lead in the final quarter.
In a frantic finish Redruth piled the pressure on the home line, there were chances but the luck fell to the home side urged on by a partisan crowd as the Lions avenged a defeat at the Recreation ground way back at the start of September.
The sky was blue on a warm spring day with a gentle breeze on a firm pitch as the Reds kicked off; they were immediately on the attack.
A penalty to the Reds gave them a chance to kick to the left hand corner, the Lions held the drives but conceded a second penalty that the Reds kicked into the right hand corner. From here Redruth launched an unstoppable drive that led to a try for Richard Brown converted by Fraser Honey with four minutes on the clock.
Both sides had chances with Lions forcing a goal line drop out and Redruth being turned over close to the line but there was no further scoring for half an hour when a well executed move from a line out saw flanker Simon Johnson peel around into a big unguarded area to run in unopposed from 15 meters for a try that Ben Youngs converted.
From the restart Will Trewin responded with a sensational try catching Honey’s kick off out on the left hand touchline to get an unopposed run to the line for an unconverted try.
Redruth were pressing the Lions line as half time approached before a serious looking leg injury to the home team captain Devon Constant saw the half ended with Redruth leading 12 – 5.
Just three minutes after the interval Will Helliwell who had moved to the left wing went over in the corner for an unconverted try to level the scores.
A spell of good play from the Reds with a strong forward drive opening up space on the blind side to give skipper Sam Stevens with a strong run the chance to score to the right of the posts, Honey converting after 51 minutes.
Lions used their bench well and stunned the Reds with two quick fire tries. First Redruth lost control of the ball at a scrum in their 22 and scrum half James Stubbs grabbed the loose ball for Helliwell to go over in the corner for an unconverted try.
From the restart Lions scored a magnificent try following a 70 meter move taking the restart cleanly, driving the Reds back before spreading the ball to the left hand touchline then right again for replacement to score wide out, Youngs converting with a good kick as the home side went ahead for the first time with 63 minutes played.
In the closing stages there were chances for the Reds to snatch the game, following a Lions knock on in goal, the ball fell to Chris Fuca but blocked by an upright he was unable to get a pass in with men unmarked outside, then an adjudged deliberate knock on just short of the line by Willcoxson brought him a yellow card but only a further penalty for the Reds. The game ended with the Reds pressing inside the 22 with what looked like a Lions knock on ending the game.
Redruth end this superb season in 2nd place but congratulations must go the Esher on winning the league.
