Match Preview

Alan Nettle12 Jan 2022 - 14:52

On Saturday the Reds defend their unbeaten away record at Henley RFC which by National 2 South standards is a comparative 'local derby' and will be a day trip out for the Reds. But, that's not to say its close as this still involves the Reds being on a coach for 11 hours or so and to give some further context when Henley visit Redruth on Feb.5th that will be their longest trip of the season.

Henley play their rugby at Dry Leas and boast a superb clubhouse complex and 4G artificial pitch. Henley have been regular opponents for the Reds in the National leagues and though they are now in National 2 South have, in the not too distant past, played at Championship and National 1 level.

Henley currently are lying in 4th place on 53 points having won 10 of their 15 matches but like the Reds they have lost 3 matches at home.
Last week the Hawks pulled off a superb 29 - 27 points away win at Hinckley. Henley's top points scorer is C.Cookland (full-back) on 79 points and their top try scorer is R.Norville (winger) on an impressive 10 trys.
The Henley club as I'm sure you are aware suffered the tragic loss of one of their players, David Hyde, after the 1st game of this season, this it goes without saying overshadows everything that happens on the pitch. At the reverse fixture on Feb.5th Redruth RFC will hold a collection for David's family.

The Reds come into this match after a disappointing 14-17 home defeat against Barnes, a match played in awful conditions. Despite this loss the Reds are still in 3rd place with 57 pts only 2 behind leaders Clifton and 1 behind 2nd place Esher. Injuries have no doubt hampered the squad over the last month but to be in 3rd place at this stage of the season is not to be sniffed at and with players coming back the Reds will mounting a stiff challenge to the top teams.
It's still very tight at the top with only 6 points covering the top 5 places.

So far this season only 1 player has featured in all 15 league matches and if you read these previews you will be aware that must be Richard Brown. Top of the tries are Jack Oulton 8, Kyle Bradley 7 & Richard Brown 7. Frazer Honey tops the points tally with 99 but will he get the kicking tee back from Will Trewin? I'll keep asking that question until they play together again and we know the answer!

If you are unable to make the trip to Henley why not watch the 2nds at home when they take on Camborne School of Mines in the Kernow League
