On Saturday the Reds welcome Bury St.Edmunds who will be travelling a mere 354 miles from Suffolk to fulfill the fixture, this being the longest trip at Level 4 and the 2nd longest in National League Rugby. The good news for Bury is that they only have to do this sort of trip once a season whereas the Reds have numerous other destinations of a similar distance.
Bury have had a mixed season, winning all 5 of their home matches but losing all 4 of their away games. OK no need to change that this weekend is there! Their best away performance would probably be the narrow 25-24 defeat at Henley. Last time out Bury overcame Hinckley by 40-25. Our visitors sit in 7th place with 26 points and a boast a +56 points difference.
The first visit of Bury to the Recreation Ground will live long in the memory of all who were there, not for the rugby, but the conditions. Heavy rain in the week had left the ground soft but in a perfectly playable condition but then a monsoon hit Redruth. By the time Bury arrived the pitch was a couple of inches under. Luckily the rain abated and the referee on the day (the now famous Sarah Cox) was ‘persuaded’ by both teams that the match was safe to go ahead. Needless to say by the end the pitch was a sea of mud; as were both teams who could have swapped jerseys and not many would have noticed. I doubt Sarah will officiate many matches like that in premiership!
The Reds should be going into the game with confidence after overturning league leaders Guernsey by 27-21 in the Channel Islands. The result was even more impressive when you realise a couple of the team were up all night before the match with food poisoning. This result leaves the Reds in 2nd place with 33 points from 8 games and a whopping +156 points difference.
So far this season 7 players have featured in all 8 league matches and a remarkable 31 players in total have featured. Top of the tries are Jack Oulton 6, Kyle Bradley 5 & Steele Barker 4. Frazer Honey tops the points tally with 73 but then again he does take most of the kicks!
