On Saturday we welcome back to Hellfire Corner Tonbridge, who travel down from the garden of England. That’s Kent if you were wondering.
Tonbridge have been having a fantastic season. After last season’s 3rd place they have kicked on again and 18 wins from 21 starts leaves them topping the league by a clear 4 points. Earlier in the season Tonbridge got the better of the Reds in a tight affair by 13-7 with the Reds being camped in the Tonbridge 22 for much of the last quarter. Last season Tonbridge did the double over the Reds so it must be time for a Cornish victory! Last week Tonbridge enjoyed a narrow comeback win at Henley by 18-17 in the top plays second encounter.
The Reds come into the game on a high after last Saturday’s excellent victory at Bury St.Edmunds. A 17-33 win was a fantastic effort and must have made the 355 mile homeward coach journey a little easier. The Reds have now won 10 games on the trot, 9 of those in National 2 South; it was this sort of form that saw Redruth RFC being named as one of the RFU’s Community Clubs of the month in January. This victory leaves the Reds in 4th place with 78 points. The improvement this season under the new coaching team can be highlighted by the fact that last season the Reds ended the season on 69 points. The Reds top points scorer so far is Fraser Honey on 165 and the top try scorer is Matt Shepherd with 11, Dean Bonds is not far behind on 9 and Richard Brown is flying the flag for the forwards on 7.
Dean Bonds also deserves special mention for being named as National 2 South player of the week for his performance in that special victory over Henley Hawks. Well done Dean.
The main event is followed by England v Scotland on the big screen in the clubhouse, kick-off 4.45pm. Possible wooden spoon play-off?
Let’s give it the big Hellfire roar on Saturday and get behind the Reds.
Dos war ty ruth (come on you Reds).
