Redruth 10 Bury St.Edmunds 3

A hard earned win in the mud against a determined visiting side. Not a day for 'pretty' rugby! Report by Bill Hooper.

Redruth were made to fight all the way by visitors Bury St Edmunds on a pitch that deteriorated rapidly as the first half wore on.
Having made the early breakthrough with two tries from catch and drives it was the excellent Redruth defence that slammed the door shut during the second half to nullify a Bury comeback.
Back from his duties with Exeter Chiefs’ Academy, for this week, head coach Marek Churcher was pleased to keep the run going. “Look it’s a win and in these conditions today that’s all that matters. I think we caught Bury a bit cold early on, we took advantage of the yellow cards to score two powerful forward tries. That gave us the breathing space we needed as conditions under foot deteriorated very quickly.
Churcher was pleased with the Reds’ defence. “Credit to Bury they came back at us well during the second half but we showed what a mean defence we have, we put in a lot of tackles and in truth they didn’t threaten out line that often.
“The forwards were excellent today, Kyle Marriott carried very well and got over the gain-line time and again, whilst the front five drove and rucked their hearts out.”
Redruth played down the slope first half into the teeth of a gale that blew across the pitch from right to left.
The visitors gave away a string of early penalties that eventually saw flanker Sean Stapleton yellow carded. Redruth took full advantage as fly-half Brett Rule kicked for the corner to set up a catch and drive that saw prop Tommy Phillips driven over after just five minutes.
Rule having missed with an earlier penalty attempt had no luck at all with the conversion which faded across the posts in the gale.
Winger Lewis Vinnicombe, who had a lively game especially during the first half, was unlucky to be yellow carded for a dangerous tackle in the slippery conditions.
Marriott constantly carried the ball all match getting over the gain-line making good ground as did props Phillips and Craig Williams.
The visitors lost their other flanker Sam Bixby to a yellow card just as Stapleton returned to the fray. Again Redruth took full advantage as Rule kicked for the corner to set up another catch and drive, young hooker Luis Powell found his man and the Redruth pack drove the Bury pack back with lock Shaun Buzza claiming the unconverted try.
Scrum-half Jack Oulton put in a strong run that took play almost up the Bury line, sadly the support just wasn’t to hand. Wing Alex Ducker tried to jink his way through the Bury defence but it was going to be a big ask to better his try tally in such conditions.

Both sides changed their shirts at half-time as the weather improved slightly with the wind dropping allowing Bury to reduce their arrears with a penalty from winger Scott Lyle.
Bury certainly had more of the play but couldn’t crack the Redruth defence.
With the pitch cutting up even more it became a slug-fest amongst the forwards. Lyle missed with another penalty attempt, whilst Redruth saw further catch and drive chances come to nothing as the game slithered to a 10-3 Redruth win.
