The Cornishmen shrugged off the effects of the long trip up-country and playing on the 3G pitch to put in a great performance. All 20 played their part as the Reds attacked with power and pace but also defended with grit and organisation to quell the challenge of the home side.
On a bright sunny day in Cheshire, it was the home side who had the first chance to put points on the board, but Tom Shard pushed his kick wide of the posts with only 2 minutes on the clock. However, moments later another penalty gave the home side a 5-metre lineout. The Reds defended well but at the expense of another penalty and a warning from referee Nathan Howarth. The home side knocked on at the next lineout and this followed by a free-kick at the scrum and then a penalty for back chat allowed the Reds to clear. The Reds attacked with pace from the lineout on halfway and forced a penalty which went deep into the 22. The visitors did not let the home side off the hook and after a third penalty opted to scrum from 5 metres. After a number of phases near to the line the ball went wide and Joe Cummins was over for an unconverted try on 12 minutes. The next period of play was in the Reds half but the Cornishmen defended comfortably keeping the home side out of their 22. A penalty for crossing, advanced by 10 metres for more back chat, got the Reds to the edge of the 22. A break out by Lymm looked very dangerous as it went to the Red 22 but a knock-on prevented a score. A scrum penalty on halfway got the Reds back within 5 metres and the maul did the rest with Tom Cowan-Dickie getting the try. Cummins converted from wide out and the Reds were 12 up after 28 minutes. After a period of play between the 22’s a penalty got the Reds within 5 metres again. The maul was held but, Connor Gilbert swatted away his would-be tackler to go over by the posts for a converted try with half-time approaching. A minute later a very satisfying first 40 for the Reds was over.
Half-time: Lymm 0 – 19 Redruth
The home side had a poor start to the second 40, a late hit on Cowan-Dickie was followed by another on Sam Bray and Jack Stride was shown the yellow card. Cummins knocked over the penalty from the edge of the 22. Lymm now got their act together and had much the better of the sin bin period keeping the Reds in their own half and 22. Their efforts were justly rewarded when from a 5-metre lineout they mauled over the try-line. James Pitcher was the try scorer and Shard was able to convert to cut the lead to 15 points. A superb take of an up-an-under by Noah Clifford earnt the Reds a penalty that was kicked to within 8 metres but the Reds conceded a penalty at the lineout. The Reds though kept the home side pinned in their own half and after some pick-an-goes near the line the Reds forced a penalty and opted to scrum. At this point Cummins had to leave the field forcing a re-jig in the Reds back division. Jacob Chapple coming on at scrum-half, Adam Hall moving to fly-half and Sam Bray to full-back. The Reds marched the home pack into retreat, Finlay Wolstencroft, controlling the ball superbly at the base got the touchdown. Hall converted the bonus point try and the Reds were 22 clear on 62 minutes. The home side looked to capitalise on the changes in the Reds back division and pressed for some time deep in red territory but the Cornishmen held firm. A great kick chase earned a penalty on halfway and the Reds were back on the attack. The Reds soon extended their lead through a penalty from Hall and they looked home and hosed with only 7 minutes left on the clock. It got even better for the Reds two minutes later when Bray intercepted in his own half and sprinted under the posts for a 50-metre score. Lymm finished the match attacking in the Reds 22 but the Cornishmen kept them at bay with resolute defence.
The Reds will be delighted with this victory which leaves them 4 points clear at the top of the table.
Next up for the Reds is a mouth-watering home fixture against second placed Hinckley on the 31st October. If you had something else planned, cancel it now.
