The Reds had this win in the bag in the first half with a superb opening forty minutes that blew away the challenge of Hornets. Dominant in scrums and lineout, with mauls continually driving the visitors towards their own try line the Reds looked like a team who were having fun. The backs looked sharp and powerful and did well to contain the dangerous Hornets back division. The visitors left wing George Williams in particular needed close attention, always making ground with speed and footwork when given the opportunity. A half-time score of 31-0 was followed by another try to stretch the lead but thereafter the Reds failed to add to their advantage coughing up a number of clear opportunities. Hornets, whose captain this season is former Redruth player Jamie Murray, to their credit always looked to attack and were rewarded with a couple tries in the final quarter.

On another bright and sunny day the Reds kicked off playing towards Hellfire Corner. After a period of kick-tennis the Reds won a free kick from a scrum in the Hornet 22. The home side went through the phases before a snipe by scrum-half Sam Bray made a few yards and Mawgan Osborne was in support to go over under the posts for try converted by Joe Cummins. Hornets then had a short period in the Reds half but a Cummins kick gained the Reds some 50 or 60 metres to clear. From a lineout on halfway the Reds mauled down field, Bray went down the blindside and Noah Clifford made good ground, offloaded to Bray who did similar to Cummins to go over in Hellfire Corner for the Reds second try on 11 minutes. The Reds were now completely on top, a Bray up-an-under created havoc and a penalty that went to 5 metres. The Reds maul was brought down but a few pick-an-goes later Tom Cowan-Dickie had the first of this hat-trick, Cummins converted to stretch the lead to 19 points. Almost immediately the Reds added another, Cowan-Dickies second, following a lineout maul from 10 metres out. That was the bonus point secured and only 20 minutes on the clock. The Reds continued to have the better of things but Hornets looked dangerous at times, Williams on the wing always keeping the defence alert. On 35 minutes the Reds scored their 5th try and Cowan -Dickies third, a line-out maul from 10 metres shoving their opponents back over the line. This was the hookers 10th try of the season making him the leagues leading try scorer. This proved to be the last score of the half.
Half-Time: Redruth 31 - 0 Hornets

Any thoughts of Hornets making a comeback were soon scotched as the Reds bossed the opening period of the second forty. A Bray up-and-under was collected by Jack Counter whose mazy run took play deep into the Hornets 22 but a he lacked support and the visitors were able to clear. A Reds penalty from a scrum on halfway led to a 10 metre lineout, from the maul Connor Gilbert took the ball as first receiver and powered through the defence for the Reds 6th and last try. Cummins converted to give the Reds a 38 point lead on 48 minutes. The match now entered a very scrappy period Hornets were able to get some possession but were always operating from their own half so their good work was always under pressure and they frequently knocked the ball on. The Reds missed a couple of clear chances, a 5 metre lineout looked to be going over but the ball was knocked-on and a 10 metre lineout peel move saw Gilbert cut open the defence but the final pass went to ground with the try line begging. On 67 minutes the Hornets got their first try, a line out maul from 10 metres made ground and following some phases near the line they moved the ball quickly to the right for Williams to score wide out. Jamie Elswood converted superbly from wide out to add the extras. The visitors now had their tails up and a period of good play led to a second try by Thomas Read, Elswood again converting. Hornets then made a hash of the kick-off and the Reds were all over the line, the visitors conceded a penalty. The Reds opted to scrum from 5 metres but the previously dominant Redruth scrum was put into reverse by the visiting eight to earn Hornets a penalty. A superb kick down the touchline forced the Reds to concede a 5 metre lineout but good defence prevented the visitors from adding to their total and the whistle went to end the game.

The Redruth Tribute Man-of-the-Match chosen by the Redruth RFC Mini/Junior Section was Connor Gilbert (a product of the Redruth Mini/Junior section).

Next Saturday the Reds make the long trip to Cheshire to take on Lymm RFC on their 3G pitch. The 2nd team take centre stage at the Recreation Ground as they meet the challenge of league leaders Cullompton RFC, please come along and give the young Redruth team your support.
