Redruth narrowly lose at the Nest

Nick Serpell14 Feb - 21:03

Two well matched sides in a game that could have gone either way

Redruth's seven match unbeaten run against Hornets came to an end in a close encounter which could have been won by either side. In the end, two breakaway tries from Hornets in the last quarter that sealed it for the home side.

Redruth started with purpose and their efforts saw Hornets concede a penalty in front of their posts after just two minutes, which Dean Wills had no problem in converting to put the Reds on the board. Unfortunately Deano was forced to leave the field shortly afterwards following a collision that left him with an injured leg.

Joe Cummins took over kicking duties and had the opportunity to show his skills after Chris Rovery had finished off a Redruth attack by going over for the first try of the game, which Cummins converted. It took Hornets five minutes to reply with a try of their own in the corner. The pass to the try scorer seemed to many to have gone forward but the referee disagreed. The kick was good to bring Hornets back into the game.

Redruth hit back almost had once after some great work from the pack powered Tom Cowan- Dickie over the line after 21 minutes with Cummins adding the extras. But this just seemed to put new life into Hornets. They fought their way into the Redruth 22 and, from a line-out, their forwards mauled over the line and scored their second try which was successfully converted.

Just before half time Noah Clifford was yellow carded for not releasing, following a previous team warning from the referee. Hornets kicked the resulting penalty to go ahead for the first time as the referees whistle went for the break.

Half-time. Hornets 21-17 Redruth.

Redruth, down to 14 men, came out on the offensive in the second half and powerful play took them up to the Hornet's line. In the resulting ruck Hornets prop, Sonny Haines infringed and was yellow carded. After consultation with his linesman the referee awarded a penalty try to the Reds to put them back in the lead.

Against the run of play Hornets staged a breakaway and found themselves clear on the outside running in for a try which was converted putting Redruth seven points adrift. By this time the full-on commitment of both teams was causing a bit of niggle and the referee had to step in and speak to both captains. In the 66th minute Redruth were again down to 14 when Jack Counter was shown a yellow card

Hornet's ability to construct an attacking move out of the most unlikely circumstances came into play again. The ball was spun wide and Josh Sheppard had a clear run to the line for a try which was converted.

It turned out to be the last score of the game. The final ten minutes saw the Reds fighting hard to get back on terms. They seemed to be on the verge of scoring and were awarded a penalty close to the Hornets line but, following an intervention from the touch judge, the penalty was reversed and Hornets breathed again.

In the final seconds Redruth again had their opponents on their own line and were mauling strongly. But the ball went lose and a grateful Hornets player booted it into touch to end what had been an entertaining game with Redruth having two points to bring home as a consolation prize which keeps them in 8th place in the table

Final score: Hornets 38-31 Redruth
