5 tries and 5 points for the Reds

When Hinckley scored a converted try in the first few minutes of the match the Redruth supporters feared the worst. They should have feared not as the home side cast aside any worries after a run of 5 defeats to run in 5 tries in an excellent display at the Recreation Ground providing some early Christmas cheer for the Reds faithful.

Redruth got proceeding underway playing towards Hellfire Corner with a strong cross field wind favouring neither side. Hinckley were soon on the score sheet. They dominated early possession and from a line out in the Reds 22 they went through the phases and ended up with a try for Callum Dacey with Rory Vowles adding the extras. Redruth soon hit back, they put a penalty into touch on the 22. Some good rugby challenged the visitors on both sides of the field, Noah Clifford was put into space on the left wing and he showed good strength to go through the final defender for a try in Piggy Lane Corner. The difficult conversion went wide to make the score 5-7 on 9 minutes. A period of midfield action ended with a Hinckley penalty which Vowles put over to stretch the lead on 15 minutes. A Hinckley scrum on the Reds 22 gave the visitors a good attacking position but good defence forced a knock-on. The Reds know had a lineout on the visitors 22, the Reds looked threatening but a knock-on ended their attack. A monster Redruth scrum drove the Hinckley pack back on halfway but the penalty went to the visitors. The visitors attack ended with a home line out in their own 22 and long after the ball was passed Sam Stevens was dumped to the ground and Oliver Bee was shown a yellow card. Hinckley initially manged the yellow card period well and kept play in the Redruth half but the Reds were able to clear after destroying the visitors scrum on two occasions.
Once more in the visitors 22 the Reds pulverised the Hinckley scrum and a penalty went to Hellfire Corner. The attack was stopped but at the expense of another penalty and another 5-metre lineout, the maul was stopped just short but a number of pick-an-goes later Tyler Gendall was over for a converted try on the stroke of halftime with a Devon Coulson also receiving a yellow card.
Half-Time: Redruth 12 – 10 Hinckley

Hinckley started the second period poorly with their kick-off not going 10 metres. The Reds now kept the visitors pinned back and a 50:22 from Angus Mawson gave the Reds a lineout 15 metres from the line. The maul powered forward but went down inches from the line, a few pick-an-goes and the ball was spun wide for Mawson to side step the last defender to score an unconverted try. Hinckley now put their kick-off straight out to give the Reds a scrum on halfway. The Reds moved the ball left, Mawson made a clean break, shipped the ball onto Ethan Morgan who, under some pressure, finished the move off for the Reds bonus point try, the kick again going wide. 22-10 to the Reds on 47 minutes. The Reds almost added another a few minutes later, a clever over the should kick by Orson James bounced kindly for Ed Pascoe but just as he seemed to gather for a certain score a stray hand of the Hinckley defended dislodged the ball for a knock-on. Play was now in the Hinckley 22 and they were adopting a run it from anywhere strategy and a couple of penalties took play deep into the home half but the Reds stole a lineout to clear. The running of the Hinckley backs was looking threatening but the Reds would not buckle. Suddenly from deep in their own half Hickley spotted a gap behind the ruck and burst down the middle, they seemed certain to score but the ball hit the ground and the Reds cleared downfield, but Hinckley ran the ball back and won a penalty. Vowles went for the posts from 40 metres but the kick dropped short and Clifford took play outside of the 22 with a strong run to allow the home side to clear. Hinckley were now getting the better of possession and position and earned a line out 5 metre from the line but obstructed at the maul and the Reds were able to clear. A charge down saw Hinckley regain the ball in the Reds 22 but Mawson was on hand to win a turnover penalty. Still Hinckley would not go away, the Reds were putting in some massive tackles however a penalty and Hinckley again had a lineout in the home 22. The Reds conceded another penalty and were on a warning. A score now and the game was up for grabs; the maul was stopped and Hinckley went through the phases hammering away at the home line. The Red wall stood firm and forced a knock-on. At the scrum Hinckley pushed too early for a free-kick to the Reds. The clearance kick however missed touch and Hinckley ran the ball back but spilled the ball, from well inside their own half the Reds ran the ball up to half way. In the next phase Tom Cowen-Dickie combined with Barney Elderkin to storm downfield and Mawson was on hand to take the scoring pass to sugar coat the Redruth victory. The missed conversion was the last act of a pulsating match.

This was a superb and much needed victory against a Hinckley side who had won their last 5 matches in direct contrast to the recent for of the Redruth side. Next Saturday there is the small matter of a match against Camborne to satisfy your rugby craving. Get there early to enjoy the derby day atmosphere.
