The tales of Greek myth tell us that the original Titans were overthrown by Zeus and the Olympians and banished from the upper world. The Redruth 1st XV hit the road this coming Saturday in an attempt to emulate the Greek gods and overcome the other Titans up in Somerset.
Last season’s away fixture at Taunton was notable for our 10-all draw, ground out in the teeth of Storm Darragh. Conditions look to be a little calmer this time round.
The Reds travel on the back of a five pointer against visitors Hornets last week which was won 26-0. The result not only maintained Redruth’s unbeaten record against the Weston side, but strong defence meant this was the first game in which Hornets had failed to get on the board since a 54-0 defeat at Dings Crusaders back in 2018 when they were both in South West Premier.
Taunton were pace-setters in this league after dropping from National 1 at the end of the 2023/24 season and finished in third place last year. However, they have found things a bit more difficult this season and are currently in 9th place with just two wins, against Hinckley and Cinderford, from their seven starts. However, apart from a 52-27 drubbing at Hornets back in September, their losses have seen close scores so no one will be underestimating them on home turf.
At the start of this season they became the first club at this level to play a Friday evening league fixture under lights, something the Reds will be doing on 30th January when we host Exeter University for our first league game under the new lights.
