Bonus point victory for the Reds.

On a miserable day with rain falling and a stiff breeze blowing into the Terry Pryor Stand the Reds will be pleased with the bonus point win. Their forwards were totally dominant at scrum time and their driving maul often marched the visitors backwards. The Reds coaches will be especially pleased with the zero in the opposition total as the Reds defence kept the dangerous visiting backs in check. Hornets fielded former Redruth player Jamie Murray at scrum half and the match also saw Sam James make a welcome return from injury.

Redruth got proceedings underway playing towards Hellfire Corner and an early turnover penalty at the breakdown earned them a lineout in the 22. The catch and drive was unstoppable and the Reds were on the board with a Jarrod Hambly try, converted by Dean Wills with only 3 minutes on the clock. The first scrum saw the Hornets pack put into full retreat as the Reds forwards looked to stamp their authority on the game. A lineout maul from the 10 metres was collapsed and the penalty went into the 22. The lineout maul again proved unstoppable and Jamie Prisk was over in Hellfire Corner for an unconverted try on 7 minutes. The Reds were dominating possession but Hornets did eventually have an attack in the Reds 22 but a knock-on stemmed their flow. The Reds had started to give away too many penalties allowing Hornets back into the game and they camped in the Reds 22. The Reds defence was firm though and they were able to hold up a 5 metre lineout and clear their lines. A scrum penalty followed and Redruth were back into the Hornets half. From the lineout on the Hornets 10 metre the Reds attacked. A scrum followed which marched the Hornets pack back, the ball was moved to the left and Jack Simmons cut through a host of would be tacklers to go under the posts for a converted try. 19-0 to the Reds after 25 minutes. The Reds scrum was now in total control and another penalty got the home side almost up to the 22, the Reds piled on the pressure and looked to be over in Piggy Lane Corner but a foot in touch prevented the score. The Reds kept up the attack and again looked to but over but the ball was spilled forward on the line. A few minutes later the whistle went for halftime.
Halftime: Redruth 19 – 0 Hornets

The second period began somewhat scrappily with pay taking place in midfield. Yet another scrum penalty got the Reds up into the 22 but an accidental offside stopped the Reds maul from charging forward. The Reds turned over the Hornets scrum on their 10 metre line and moved the ball into the 22 and won a penalty which went to 10 metres out. A back peel move saw Sam James cut a great line and go over for a converted try to put the Reds 26 points to the good on 52 minutes. After a period of play in the midfield Hornets earned a lineout on the Reds 22, after a disagreement between the packs Luke Barnes was shown the yellow card. Could Hornets use the next 10 minutes to launch a comeback? Although the sin bin period saw the play predominantly take place in the Redruth half Hornets never really came close to a score. The remainder of the game passed with neither side able to sustain any significant pressure and the match ended without any further scoring.

Next Saturday the Reds make the relative short trip to Somerset to take on old rivals Taunton.
