Redruth 26 - 22 Lymm

Pack Powers the Reds over the line.

Two home fixtures and two home wins makes good reading and once again it was the power of the Redruth pack that drove them to victory. In horrible conditions with driving rain and a strong wind blowing towards Piggy Lane Corner the first hour was one for the purists. Back play was almost impossible in the first hour and with the Reds 8 dominating the win didn't seem in doubt and it was just a question of how much. Then the conditions settled, the wind eased and the driving rain stopped and the Lymm backs burst into life repeatedly stressing the home defence. Lymm scored with the last play of the game to close to within 4 points and the Reds supporters were happy to hear the final whistle.

The Reds kicked off playing towards the Scoreboard and with the wind predominately in their opponents favour. An early scrum forced the visitors pack backwards and the Reds forced a holding on penalty which Dean Wills slotted to put the Reds 3-0 to the good after 4 mins. The visitors squad things only 2 minutes later with a penalty of their own. The Reds now dominated the next period repeatedly forcing their opponents into transgressions and forcing the referee to issue a yellow card warning. A 5 metre line out was driven over the line for a Chris Rovery try in the corner and Wills was only just wide with the touchline conversion. Soon after a high tackle saw Jack Stride get a yellow card for the visitors but the Reds were unable to take advantage on the scoreboard. The Reds had much the better of the remainder of the half as their scrum was a consistent source of penalties and the visitors were struggling at line-out time. The Lymm defence though was strong in the backs and the Reds threequarters could make little headway. The Reds will have been disappointed not being further ahead but leading by 8-3 at the break and with the slope and wind in their favour in the second period would have gone in felling that the game was theirs for the taking.
Half-Time: Redruth 8 - 3 Lymm

The Reds started the second period quickly, the Lymm front row were on a warning for persistent offending and after 44 minutes prop Bem Lilley was show the yellow card. The Reds took immediate advantage, a line out maul on the 22 made good ground and then a series of powerful carries ended with Tom Cowan -Dickie going over for a converted try to put the Reds 15-3 clear. Lymm continued to transgress under pressure and a couple of penalties got the Reds into the 22. A 5 metre line out was soon mauled over the line in Hellfire Corner to put the Reds 17 points clear on 50 minutes. A 50:22 by Dan Rutter got the Reds back on the attack and another try beckoned but suddenly it was the Reds who started to give away penalties and 3 in a row took play into the home 22. A slick move in the backs cut the Reds apart and Nathan Beesely went over for a try converted by Tom Shard to cut the deficit. The visitors lineout was now functioning and conversely the Reds now started to lose their own lineout ball on occasions. The Reds though through scrum penalties got back on the attack and the visitors received their third yellow card, this time for a high tackle close to their own try line. With the man advantage the Reds surprisingly opted to kick the penalty to stretch the lead to 13 points on 65 minutes. Almost immediately the Reds after a long kick and a great chase forced a holding on penalty in the visitors 22 had an opportunity chance to put the game to bed. But the 5 metre line out went astray and the chance was lost. On 71 minutes it was the Reds turn to see yellow when Craig Williams was carded for a high tackle. The Lymm backs were looking dangerous and a try in the Tribute Lounge corner looked certain but a great cover tackle by Noah Clifford saved the day. The visitors however kept up the pressure and were soon over for a try by Dan Hunter superbly converted from the touchline by Shard to make it a 6 point game with 3 minutes remaining. A nervousness had taken hold in the crowd but the Reds made the game safe a few minutes later when Wills judged the wind perfectly put over a penalty from the 10 metre line. A 9 point lead with only 2 minutes left but Lymm had the last word and after good play by the backs got them up the field they scored a 5 metre maul try of their own through Tom Manaton, to earn a losing bonus point on the final whistle.
The Reds will be please with the victory but will know that on their 3G pitch in the return fixture that Lymm will be a difficult nut to crack.
The Tribute man of the match chose by the Redruth Charity Trust was No.8 Chris Rovery.

Next Saturday the Reds make the long trip to league newcomers Syston (look it up on a map) and the seconds again don't have a fixture.
The Reds are back at the Recreation Ground on October 4th when they take on Old Redcliffians with a 3pm kick-off.
