Another large crowd enjoyed some sunshine and another Mining Division derby on a blustery day at Camborne. The home side, who have again recruited widely in the summer, deservedly came out on top in their drive for promotion.
Camborne with got off to a great start after a move of multiple phases they won a penalty which was put to within 5 metres and the forwards drove over for a Ben Priddy try converted by Josh Matavesi. The Reds now got on the front foot and scored a penalty through Dean Wills after a high tackle in the 22. After a period of play in midfield Camborne added to their tally when a long cut out pass gave Harry Larkins just room enough to squeeze over in the corner for an unconverted try. The Reds now had significant pressure in the home 22 but a penalty against the Reds scrum when it was moving forward allowed Town to clear. The Reds however kept up the pressure and got to within 5 metres but the ball went to ground and Camborne used the wind to good effect to clear to halfway. Unfortunately for the Reds, a few minutes later chasing a high kick Jack Counter got his timing just off and received a yellow card for tackling the man in the air. Camborne took advantage of the extra man by working an overlap in the left to give Larkins an easy try in the corner. The Reds now looked to hit back and had multiple pick-an-goes on the Town line but were unable to get the score and were held up over the line. The Reds were made to pay for this a few minutes later when after some play in the Reds half Jordan Nicholls broke the line to run in from the 22 for a converted try. There was just time for the restart before the whistle was blown for half-time.
Half-time: Camborne 24 – 3 Redruth
Would the wind prove a greater advantage than the slope in the second period and could the visitors stage a comeback, neither as it turned out. It was not to be and the home side after a couple of powerful scrums created room for Josh Matavesi to crash over near to the posts for a try he converted to put the Reds 31-3 behind and facing a mountain. Town now looked to pile it on and spent some time in the Reds 22 but the Redruth defence held firm and were able to clear. After some good paly by the Reds a high ball was dropped by Larkins giving the Reds a scrum in the 22. It was the Reds turn now to challenge the Town defence with multiple phases that led to a penalty and a 5-metre lineout. Another penalty followed which the Reds tapped and eventually Chris Rovery was able to squeeze over the line for a try converted by Wills with the game moving into the last quarter. The next phase of the game was very even with both sides having their moments and play moving from end to end. With around five minutes left on the clock Sam Walker did well to finish off a back line move after a lineout in the 22 for a converted try. Straight after the restart Jamie Prisk got a yellow card for a high tackle and the Reds faced a difficult end to the match. To their credit it was the Reds who finished the match on top and after multiple phases and penalties in the Town 22 Ben Priddey got a yellow card for persistent offending. A 5-metre lineout was stopped short but Dan Rutter was able to sneak for a try which Wills converted on the final whistle.
The Reds will be disappointed with the result and will look to get back to winning ways at home to Lymm next Saturday with a 2pm kick-off.
