On Saturday morning the Reds set out on the relatively short trip to Bristol to take on Old Redcliffians in the last match of the season. In a league full of 3G pitches I’m glad to report that the Old Reds still have a grass pitch. To make things even better their pitch has a significant slope so the Reds should feel right at home.
Our hosts are having their best ever season and currently sit in 4th place with 80 points. Their top try scorer is Jalen Curry (flanker) with 13 and Ashley Groves (fly-half) is their top points scorer with 148. They have had a number of good wins but probably their best being the 18-17 win over then leaders Luctonians back in December. Saturday will be busy as the club will be holding their players reunion.
The two clubs met on the first game of the season when the Reds won 28-21 on a miserable September day. Old Reds were 21 points up after only 27 minutes and the Reds were looking down and out. But the Reds gradually got on top with the power of their scrum leading the way and the game was won by the home side with a penalty try 10 mins from time.
The Reds closed the home season on a high last Saturday with a 38-19 win over Dudley Kingswinford. It was a great day in the sunshine with the mini-junior parade and then post match drinks in Hellfire Corner. The clubhouse was bouncing until late into the night.
The victory takes the Reds into 9th place with 65 points. Matt Pritchard leads the way with tries on 8 and has now been joined on this number by Ben Fox, Sam James is only 1 back on 7. Nat Dart just tops the points tally with 45.
After the match the Reds will be venturing into Wales to take in the cultural highlights of Cardiff!
