Tribute Man-of-the-Match: Jack King[/b]

Redruth after going to behind early came out on top against a combative Chester side. The Reds won the battle of the collisions frequently driving their opponents back but the visitors prowess on the ground won them countless penalties to keep them in the game. It wasn't until Dean Bonds went over dep into the 2nd period that the result looked secure.

The Reds kicked off playing towards Hellfire Corner but against the stiff breeze, the pitch initially looked in good shape but the very heavy rain in the morning made it cut up for the first time this season. It was Chester who would strike first. A long kick got the visitors into the 22 and although good Redruth defence drove then back to the 10 yard line a breakdown penalty gave them a foothold in the 22. The initial line out maul was stopped but after a few phases a gaping hole at the side of the ruck was exposed and flanker James Lloyd scampered over for a converted try on 6 mins. The Reds were quick to hit back, a box kick out of defence found grass and Dean Bonds was onto the ball in a flash, his clever kick ahead saw athletic lock Morgan Osborne win the race to the ball in Hellfire Corner, the conversion from wide out shaving the post, the visitors 7-5 ahead on 10 mins. The Reds now had a good period of play and a scrum penalty got them into the visitors half, some good phases play earned another penalty which went into Piggy Lane corner. The Reds got the driving maul moving towards the centre of the pitch and Jack King was try scorer just to the left of the posts. Harvey Beckerleg made no mistake with the conversion, Reds 12-7 up on 19 mins. Chester now had a period of ascendancy but the Reds defence held firm despite their opponents showing great ball retention and the penalty count mounting against the Reds mainly at the breakdown. The Reds did have one chance from a 5 yard penalty in Hellfire Corner but gave a penalty away for binding in front of the catcher. With the last play of the half Chester almost scored, the ball was put behind the defence but the Chester player knocked on diving on the ball with the line at his mercy.
Half-Time: Redruth 19 - 7 Chester

With the pitch now cutting up the second half was a real battle. Both teams should be praised for playing rugby throughout and the spectators would have been pleased that the match did not end up in a game of tedious kick tennis. The visitors probably had the bulk of possession in the second period and showed good continuity but the Reds were able to keep them at arms length for much of the time and much of the half was played out in the middle third of the pitch. Redruth scored the only try of the half, a quick break down the short side and then a good 'flat pass' out to Bonds saw the Reds winger fly over for the home sides third try. A good conversion by Beckerleg put the Reds 14 points to the good on 63 mins. Chester had their moments and the Reds had to on their guard to see out the match but showed great spirit and organisation to do so. In the last few minutes the Reds put some pressure on the Chester line looking for the bonus point try but a knock on under pressure saw the chance slip by.
