It's hard really to do this game justice, to start with it was more than just a game it was an occasion watched by a crowd of thousands. Put simply it was the biggest Cornish sporting event of the year. The crowd were treated to a classic of its kind, two fully committed teams going hammer and tongs, the home side roaring out of the blocks, Camborne then fighting back to lead before the Reds tied things up late in the second period. Both teams had their chances to win but only the most partisan and one-eyed spectators could argue that the draw was not a fair result.

Redruth were led onto the field by Dean Bonds playing in his 200th match for the Reds, a fantastic achievement.
Redruth kicked off playing towards the scoreboard end on a grey but calm day with the hint of Cornish mizzle in the air. From the outset the Reds tore into Camborne pinning the visitors into their own 22 and the game was only a few minutes old when Tommy Phillips crashed over under the posts for a converted try. The Reds continued to have the better of things from the restart, wining the physical battle with numerous dominant tackles. A penalty got them into the visitors 22 and a peel move off the back of the line out saw Sam James slice through the Camborne defence for an unconverted try on 12 mins. Camborne are too good a side to be down for long and they now had a period of pressure, a not straight ruined a chance from a 5 metre line-out and then winger Harry Larkins was tackled into touch near the corner flag. The scrums were a battle ground but neither side would give an inch. A long Redruth kick was knocked on by Camborne in their 22 and the Reds were back on the front foot. Playing a penalty advantage, some good passing almost put Dean Bonds in at the corner and from the resulting penalty the Reds spurned the simple 3 points and went to the touchline. A try would have made things very difficult for the visitors but they defended their line well and the Reds came away pointless. Now for the first time Camborne manged to make ground through the middle getting behind the Reds line. From a scrum in the 22 Josh Matavesi took the ball on the crash and was only stopped just short, a couple of phases later Adam Nicholls was over for a converted try on the stroke of half-time. This was to prove crucial as at one stage the Reds looked like going in 19 points to the good now it was only 5.
Half-Time: Redruth 12 - 7 Camborne

Camborne came out for the second period firing, they kept the play in Redruth territory and after a multi-phase move Jago Shepperd went over in the scoreboard corner on 47 mins for an unconverted try, 12-12 game on. The Reds tried to hit back but despite some possession in the Camborne 22 could not add to their tally. A series of penalties allowed Camborne to kick their way up the pitch. A series of phases on or around the Reds line were well defended but another penalty saw Sam James get a team yellow card for persistent offending. Camborne did not let up the pressure and it was not a surprise when Ben Priddey went over for a converted try on 60 mins to put Town ahead for the first time. Another period of Redruth pressure failed to add points as they were met with stiff defence but then Charlie Levick on a stirring run into the visitors territory was taken out high leading to a yellow card for Larkins on 68 mins. The penalty got the Reds deep into the visitors territory and then after Camborne defended a 5 metre line-out the Reds got back onto the attack and after a series of phases all-action flanker Jack King went over under the posts for a converted try to make it 19-19 on 76 mins. Despite both teams having their moments in the last few minutes the final whistle went and the crowd streamed from the ground appreciative of the entertainment they had witnessed.

A word about the man with the whistle Neil Sweeney who had an excellent day in this high pressure match, his calm authority did much to enhance the occasion.

The Tribute Redruth man-of-the-match chosen by MKM 'Mr.200' Dean Bonds.
