This will be the first meeting between the clubs since the 2010-2011 season when both matches were won by the home side. Those with long memories will remember that Redruth were relegated that season from National League 1 (Level 3) despite winning 12 and drawing 2 of their 30 matches and racking up 62 points. Indeed Redruth won 3 and drew 1 of their last 4 matches but fell agonisingly 1 point shy of safety.

In 2007, again at Level 3, the makeup of the league was so Northern/South East heavy that Stourbridge became Redruth’s ‘local derby’ and Christmas fixture, a mere 500 mile round trip, hardly Camborne! Ironically Redruth were Stourbridge’s longest trip that season!

Last season Stourbridge finished 4th in National League 2 North, winning 21 of their 29 matches so should prove tough opponents on Saturday. They had a formidable home record on their artificial surface winning all but one of their matches.
Pre-season from what I can ascertain from the clubs social media output consists solely of a home defeat to Dorking by 26 – 38, another match against Swansea being cancelled.
Stoubridge probably boast some of the best facilities to be seen at Level 4, a superb clubhouse overlooking the main pitch which is floodlit and comes with a RFU artificial pitch and opposite a large grandstand. In addition to this they have two more pitches with one again being floodlit.

Redruth come into this match buoyed by a 26-24 win over Plymouth Albion in pre-season. The match showed that the Reds have lost none of their will to win over the summer break twice coming from behind in the final 20 mins against their much vaunted opponents. Redruth were due to travel to South Wales to play Glamorgan Wanderers and Dina Powys but the match fell victim to the summer heat wave with player welfare being correctly put first. The squad will have a fairly similar look to that which finished 2nd in National 2 South last season. Look out for team news on Friday morning.

Saturday should be a momentous day for Redruth hooker and former captain Richard Brown who subject to fitness and selection will be playing his 300th match for the club, a fantastic achievement. Maybe last season’s top try scorer will open his account for the season?
