On Saturday Redruth welcome to the Recreation Ground Barnstaple RFC who are familiar visitors having been opponents long before League Rugby started. The club is nicknamed 'Barum' a contraction of the Latin form of the town name ad Barnastapolitum in Latin documents and the clubs emblem is a castle, which was built in the 11th or 12th century, but these days to the naked eye is a big mound of earth in the town centre.
Our opponents, if your geography is not that strong, are from North Devon. This is an area of the country that is very similar to Cornwall, small towns, a beautiful coastline with some lovely beaches and too many second home owners! Barnstaple is also not to be confused with Barnstable which is in the good old US of A.
The club itself is based on similar foundations to the Reds in that it has a strong emphasis in 'growing their own' through strong mini-junior & colts sections.
Barnstaple are not having a season to remember, so far they have only won two of their 10 matches both away from home against Bournville and Hornets. They are currently in 12th place with 11 points and a -134 point difference.
Last time out Barum lost at home to high fliers Clifton by 3-29.
Their kicker is Jake Murphy (fly-half/centre) who will be familiar to many at Redruth due to his time at Launceston and of course in the Black & Gold of Cornwall. Jake is on 78 points a total which includes 2 tries. Another Black & Gold stalwart Ben Hilton could well feature for Barum.
The Reds come into this match after losing at table toppers Leicester Lions last time out by 31-15. The score line doesn't really reflect the balance of play which was 50/50 but the Lions took their chances better than the Reds and a long range try early on after the Reds looked certain to score themselves was a good example of this. Nevertheless the Reds are in good shape currently sitting in 5th place with 37 points with a +170 points difference.
Fraser Honey continues to rack up the points and is now on 108. The top try scorers are Dean Bonds and Will Trewin both on 8.
Look out for team news on Friday.

Interesting Fact
We will soon have another player reach 100 appearances for Redruth 1st XV and so therefore earn the honour of wearing the coveted Red Blazer. Ed Pascoe has just played his 97th game and so, subject to selection and availability, will reach 100 at the away game against Loughborough University.
