St.Austell 10 - 35 Redruth

Alan Nettle16 Aug 2025 - 17:04

In a typical pre-season friendly encounter the Reds ran out victors by 5 tries to 2

The usual second period conveyer belt of changes made the last 40 a bit more of a disjointed affair but both sets of coaches will be pleased with efforts of their squads.

The Reds got proceedings underway playing into the stiff breeze that was blowing down the pitch. There were only 5 minutes on the clock when Tom Cowan-Dickie scored the first try courtesy of a driving maul from a 5 metre line-out. Dean Wills slotted the difficult conversion to put the Reds 7 points to the good. The Reds made a mess of the kick-off and were forced to drop out from under the posts. St.Austell ran the ball back but the Reds turned over possession and Jack Simmons broke free down the right wing, a good pass inside saw debutant scrum-half Sam Bray sprint over under the posts for a try bettered by Wills on 8 minutes. A brief period of pressure from the home side was repulsed and the Reds got down the field once more. From a scum in the 22 a slick training ground move seemed to have earned a try under the posts but the last pass was adjudged to have been forward. The Reds had a lineout on halfway and took the ball off the top, Lewis Thomas took the ball at pace and burst through the middle and he was able to go around the full-back and storm over under the posts for another converted try. The Reds 21 points up after 24 minutes. St.Austell stalwart and former Red Matt Shepherd came onto the field and in typical style took the ball at pace in the midfield where he ran into the brick wall that is Finlay Woostencroft, the spectators letting out a sympathetic ooh when his progress was halted. A few minutes later the Reds almost added another when a swift switch of play to the blind side created the overlap but again the last pass was forward. St.Austel l finished off the first period on the attack and forced a number of line-outs in the visitors 22 but were unable to get over the Redruth line.
Half-Time: St.Austell 0 - 21 Redruth

The second half as mentioned earlier suffered from the mass of substitutions from both sides and was a less fluent affair. The Reds missed an early chance to add to their tally via a 5 metre lineout and it was the hosts who would score first in the second period. After some pressure in the Reds 22 the home side forced a 5 metre line-out and they were able to go over for their first score on 55 minutes, the try being unconverted from wide out. The Reds came back and piled on the pressure with a lot of possession in the home half and 22. Finally the pressure told and after some pick-an-goes from near to the line Cam Leigh went over for a converted try. 5 to 28 in favour of the Reds after 67 minutes. A clever 50:22 from Jacob Chapple got the Reds back on the front foot but the home side held firm. From a scrum on halfway some good phase play got the Reds deep into the 22 but the home side turned the ball over. Bravely the Saints ran from their own line but on the 22 they were themselves turned over and Lewis Thomas was able to charge down the left wing for his second try, Dean Wills converting superbly from wide out. The home side had the final word when after a series of penalties in the home 22 they were able to go over in the right had corner. The conversion was wide and the referee blew for time.

Next Saturday the Reds take on the Cornish Pirates at home with a 3pm kick-off.
