With league rugby taking precedence these days both clubs opted to ring the changes in their Boxing Day line-ups, the Reds made 10 changes and Camborne 12 to their starting XVs of only 5 days ago. It was Redruth who would prove to have the stronger squad as they ground out a 4 try victory to again lift the milk churn. The weather was calm but gloomy with a hint of Cornish mizzle in the air, but not enough to dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic 2000+ crowd that had again turned out to support this traditional part of the Christmas celebrations. The Reds were led out by Jack Simmons who was making his 150th appearance for the Reds in the 150th year of the club.
Camborne got the game underway playing towards Hellfire corner. Camborne had a line out around the Reds 10 metre line but they lost the ball and their struggles at the line out would be a theme of the match as they would be rarely be able to get clean possession in this area. A penalty allowed the Reds to kick into the 22. The Reds piled on the pressure and they pummelled away at the Camborne line earning a series of penalties which led to a warning the the Town side. Camborne were defending their line very strongly, the Reds opted for some scrums but the pressure as relived as Town earned a penalty to clear their lines. A massive Camborne line out maul got them on the front foot and earned a penalty which they punted into the Reds 22 with a superb kick. Under an advantage Town had a series of pick-an-goes on the Reds line but were met with an equally stern defence. From the next line out the Reds were able to hold up the maul and a scrum penalty allowed the Reds to clear. On around 16 mins Camborne's Cameron Bone received a yellow card for some foul play at the ruck and the Reds were back in Camborne territory. From a Camborne scrum on their own 22, Josh Matavesi, playing No.8, broke up and beyond halfway and put in a well judged kick that went just over the Reds try line, the race to the touchdown being just won by Ashley Hosking. Immediately from the drop out restart another kick went into Hellfire Corner and again the Reds were only just first to the ball. The next drop-out was dropped by Town near halfway and the Reds earned a penalty at the next scrum to get back on the attack. A line out maul looked certain to go over the line but was held up just short for a Camborne scrum where they earnt a penalty to clear. Another Town line-out malfunction gave the Reds a scrum and warning to Camborne. The resulting lineout maul went over the line for the Reds first try to Jamie Prisk, Dan Rutter adding the extras on 28 mins. Almost immediately Camborne were on the attack but the Reds were able to hold up a 5 metre lineout maul. A lovely Reds backline move got them back into the 22 and another powerful maul was again held up by Town just short. This was to prove the last significant action of a fairly even first 40 and the Reds went in 7 point to the good.
Half-Time: Redruth 7 - 0 Camborne
In an interesting start to the second period Camborne confidently marked the kick-off. A few minutes later referee James Milliner apologised for allowing the mark much to the amusement of all on the field. Its fair to say that most of the crowd had no idea of the law in this area! Another scrum penalty got the Reds into Camborne territory. A maul took play into the Camborne 22 and after multiple pick-an-goes they were held up over the line by the determined defence. The goal line drop-out though went straight out to gift the Reds a 5 metre scrum which led to a penalty and another scrum which the Reds powered forward for a pushover try to Connor Triggs. Rutter converted to double the Reds lead on 51 mins. The Reds were now well on top with both the Camborne lineout and scrum struggling. Triggs looked to be over for his second but the try was correctly not given for a double movement. On around halfway the Reds stole a Town lineout and went through the phases, from a ruck just outside the 22 they moved the ball left and Charlie Levick did well to go over in Piggy Line corner for an unconverted try on 63 mins. Both sides over the final quarter of the game emptied their benches in a series of coming and goings too numerous to document. The Reds were now well on top and play was now almost entirely in Camborne territory. The visiting side were attempting to run out of defence and were moving the ball well but were unable to break out. The Reds were banging away at the Camborne line and Kaea Griffiths was shown a yellow card for a high tackle. The Reds opted to run the ball and soon powered over the line for a Cam Leigh try, converted by Dean Wills on 75 mins. The remainder of the game did not bring any further scoring although a strong run out of defence by Towns Liam Jolly caught the eye.
As ever both sides gave their all in this well contested local derby handled with good humour by Referee James Milliner.
