Teams Announced.
Boxing Day - Monday 26th December - Kick-off at 2pm
Redruth v Camborne for the Roddas Milk Cup
As expected both clubs are fielding strong sides this Boxing Day. Camborne have picked their league XV with only Nico De Battista missing from what could be considered their strongest line-up. The starting XV contains 10 former Redruth Colts.
The Reds have also picked an exciting looking team that shows 7 changes from their last league outing against Loughborough Students. Into the front row comes young prospect Bailey Williams for his first start of the season and making his debut in the centre is another youngster Sam James. Look out for more debuts from the bench from the likes of Dean Wills, Cal Grhomann and making his rugby comeback Tyler Gendall. Also poised to come on is Shaun Buzza for his first game of the season. Redruth will be led onto the field by Ed Pascoe making his 100th competitive appearance for the Reds, a great achievement and he will soon be seen wearing the coveted Red Blazer.
The weather is set to be dry, bright and sunny so blow off those Christmas Cobwebs at the Rec and stay on to watch Rudi’s Message in the clubhouse.
Referee: James Milliner.
Assistant Referees: Rob Lowe & Luca Burnasconi.
Firstly thanks to Rodda's https://www.roddas.co.uk/ for once again sponsoring this fixture, the oldest continuous fixture in world rugby, the match that even Covid could not stop.
The Rodda's cup tally currently stands at Redruth 16, Camborne 3.
Camborne are having a great season and currently stand top of Regional 1 South West (Level 5) 5 points clear of nearest rivals Chew Valley having invested heavily in their squad in pre-season.
Having started life in the leagues at Level 4 in the old Area South League in 1987 Camborne have played most of their league rugby at lower levels and even spent 4 seasons at Level 7. But over the last 10 years they climbed the leagues again and are now in their 7th season at Level 5 look certain to get back to where they started at Level 4. This raises the prospects of some tasty league derbies next season which will certainly put a smile on the faces of the respective clubs treasurers as bumper gates will be guaranteed and the travel to the away fixture should be somewhat more straightforward and cheaper than going to Shropshire!
This is one match where home advantage is not likely to be such a great advantage as a large proportion of the Camborne side played their colts rugby at Redruth. Indeed the Camborne squad of 18 that took on Exmouth last Saturday included 9 former Redruth colts and 3 other players who haver played most of their senior rugby at Redruth.
This match for the first time in many years could well feature the strongest sides the teams are able to put out on the day as league rugby does not restart until 7th January 2023. The Reds will be especially keen to get on the field after having their match last Saturday against Exeter University called off due to a frozen pitch.
