The long history of competition between Cornwall and our neighbours from across the Tamar takes a new step on Saturday with the inaugural staging of the Tamar Shield. The teams in this new innovation will be selected from those playing for clubs in their respective County leagues, so Level 8 and below.
Todays venue is entirely fitting as this ground was where it all began in home games against Devon and todays teams will be treading the same ground as those pioneers of the game in the 19th century. 142 years have passed since Cornwall and Devon first locked horns in the sport of Rugby Union. The first match took place at Plymouth on 12/01/1884 with Devon winning by 2 goals and 3 tries to nil (the scoring system was somewhat different in those days). The Cornishmen got their revenge on 02/12/1884 when they beat Devon by 1 goal and 2 tries to 1 try at the Recreation Ground, Redruth.
The Cornwall Clubs side also played earlier this year when they narrowly beat the Cornwall U20 team.
