The members of Redruth RFC are deeply saddened to report the passing of Derek “Chips” Collins at the age of 87.
Derek’s service to Redruth RFC was immense, President, Captain, Life Member and long-serving player.
Derek’s rugby journey began at St Ives RFC, where he earned his England Schoolboys cap in 1953/54. It was there that the foundations were laid for a career built on physicality, commitment and pride in the shirt.
Ironically, Derek made his Redruth debut on 27 February 1965 in a reserve team fixture against St Day a game the Reds won 8–0. A week later he made his 1st XV debut against Newton Abbot, another victory, 16–6. By coincidence again, Redruth 2nd XV are scheduled to play Newton Abbot this Saturday, a reminder of how life has a habit of coming full circle!
Derek went on to make well over 100 appearances for the Reds. He was an uncompromising second-row forward, who could also operate in the back row, he built a reputation as a hard and direct competitor who never took a backward step. He represented Cornwall on two occasions in 1972 and captained the club in the 1972/73 season. On a personal note, I was fortunate to play alongside Derek as a Colt in the 2nd and 3rd XVs. He always made sure I was looked after which was typical of the man behind the formidable exterior.
His contribution off the field was just as significant. Derek was a founder member of the Redruth Mini & Junior section, helping to establish a pathway that has benefited generations of young players. Both his sons, Luke and Lee, came through those age groups. Luke went on to make over 100 1st XV appearances for the Reds and earned representative honours with Cornwall and England Counties, a source of great pride to Derek.
He served as President from 2003 to 2014, taking over from former RFU President Bill Bishop, and was Chairman of the club’s Executive Committee from 2011 to 2014, taking over from me in that role. His long service was recognised with Life Membership of the club.
To most in the town he was simply “Chips”, a nickname earned through the fish and chip shop he owned and ran with his recently departed wife Geraldine. They ran this business together for many years. The business was part of the community, as were Derek and Geraldine themselves.
Redruth RFC has lost a significant part of its history. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
