Since the publication of the announcement of the passing of Antony Grigg the club has received a more detailed history of Antony's career as a police officer and his involvement with Redruth Rugby Football Club written by his son Luke. The club feels that it is appropriate to post this in its entirety .... Thank you
'Antony Martin Grigg joined the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary on Monday 30th April 1990, as PC 3915. As his Dad and twin brother were also serving police officers, this generated a lot of press interest both locally and nationally.
After initial training at Middlemoor and Chantmarle he was posted to Charles Cross in Plymouth followed by a post probationary move to St Austell. He said on many occasions how it was a shock to the system to experience such a complete difference in policing styles. He later moved to Camborne.
Antony's ambition from a very early age was to join Traffic. He did this on Monday 16th October 1995, and started his Standard Driving Course on that day. He took his black cap with him on the course, as, although he had his white cap, he did not wear it. This was because his take on it, was that until he passed his course he was not 'real Traffic'. Whilst on the department he achieved another of his dreams, becoming a Police Motorcyclist.
Having passed his promotion exams he moved off the department, having been advised that he would need to, to gain the required experience to develop further. He was promoted to Sergeant in July 2003 and posted to Penzance and passed his Inspector's Exam in 2007. He carried out many roles, including Crime Reduction Officer, Response Sergeant, Custody Sergeant and many more as Acting Inspector.
Antony retired as a sworn officer on 29th April 2020.He was always proud to be a police officer and work with some amazing people, to the degree that he remained with the organisation in the Crime Standards Department.
Antony began his affiliation with the Redruth Rugby Community at the age of 11, when the highly acclaimed Terry Pryor insisted that Antony and his twin brother Phillip, joined the Redruth School rugby team. One of Antony’s most fond memories was how Mr. Pryor once delayed a Geography class so he could practice scrummaging before a match against Truro School.
His relationship with Redruth Rugby Club officially began over 30 years ago when he made his debut for the 3rd XV. At one point, Antony was the only one from the 3rd’s who turned up for training and was questioned by the team on the following Saturday, “why on earth did you turn up for training?” Times have most definitely changed since then.
Antony's connection to the club deepened when he became a steward, taking particular pride in marking the pitches after matches, as he could do so alongside his young son at the time, Luke.
In 2010, Antony began coaching Luke's Under 12s team alongside Simon "Sully" O'Sullivan as part of the Redruth Mini Juniors, in which they won the county cup in his first year of taking on the side. During this time, Antony also refereed numerous mini junior games, with his only yellow card ever issued being to his son, Luke.
Most recently he has been involved with the 2nd XV, assisting in running the line as he always enjoyed the officiating responsibilities, and was respected for his firm but fair approach.
The messages received by the family show how well-respected Antony was in his career, and will be greatly missed by family, friends and colleagues.'
