An excellent start to the new campaign for the Reds as they swept aside their east midland opponents for a bonus points win. The Reds showed a cutting edge in attack that the Lions found difficult to cope with and were full value for their win.
Redruth playing towards Hellfire Corner, but against the wind, were almost over in the first few minutes but Tommy Philips was adjudged held up over the line which led to drop kick out from under the posts, one of a number of trial rules. The Lions then had their only sustained period of domination when a series of penalties on the Reds line were met by a firm Reds defence with the siege finally lifted by a penalty to the home side. After 17 mins the Reds got on the board with a flowing move from a line out on halfway, Sam Stevens crashing over under the posts for a converted try. A Frazer Honey penalty soon after put the Reds 10 points up and this was followed by a purple patch with the Reds putting together flowing moves stretching the Lions defence and seemingly penetrating at will. Another try for Sam Stevens came in Hellfire corner followed by a Jack Oulton try in Piggy lane corner. This put the Reds 20 points up at the break.
Early in the 2nd half a Joel Matavesi break from a line-out on halfway was well finished off for another Jack Oulton try converted by Frazer Honey. Despite coming close on a number of occasions, and always looking dangerous moving the ball, this proved to be the Reds last score of the game which was played out largely in the Lions half. A Lions attack in Hellfire Corner was quelled when replacement prop Jess Tompsett ripped the ball from the Lions maul to allow the Reds to clear their lines. With 5 mins to go a superb midfield break by Lions scum-half Stubbs saw him run in from 40 yards for a consolation try. Full time was called with the Reds again in the Lions 22. Next week the Reds travel to London to take on Barnes with their next home game being in two weeks against Henley.
