The Reds 2's deservedly overcame their determined opponents on a blustery day at the Recreation Ground, the Reds had much the better of possession and territory due to their better use of the wind in the first 40 and better kicking in general. Wivey defended very well and did not give an inch all day with their scrum looking particularly powerful.
Wiveliscombe kicked off playing towards Hellfire corner and into the strong breeze. The Reds established early field position in Wivey territory courtesy of some great clearance kicks and a 50:22 that took play from the home 22 into the visitors 22. The Reds never came close to going over the line but they earnt penalty in front of the sticks which Ashley Hosking popped over to put the Reds 3 points up on 7 mins.
A long Reds clearance almost made touch in the 22 but the Wivey full-back fielded well, a clever grubber kick which he reclaimed got the visitors into the Reds half where they forced a penalty which was put into touch about 7 metres out. From scrappy line out possession Wivey pounded the Reds line but the defence held firm and the attack ended with Wivey being held up over the line. The Reds were to play much of the remainder of the half in the visitors half, using the wind to gain ground easily anytime the visitors looked like breaking out. They were met however with a stubborn and strong Wivey defence and try scoring chances were hard to come by. Just when the Reds looked like breaking down the visitors defence and were within a couple of metres Luke Allington was shown a yellow card for an offence of the ruck allowing Wivey to clear. Despite the numerical disadvantage the Reds continued to press but the visitors line was not to be breeched, the Reds had to content themselves with 2 well struck penalties from 35 metres by Hosking to extend their lead before the break.
Half-Time: Redruth 9 - 0 Wiveliscombe
The Reds started the 2nd period well and a penalty from Hosking extended their lead on 45 mins to 12 points. Wivey were next to attack after the Reds were penalised when trying to run the ball out of their own 22. The penalty went to the scoreboard corner and the lineout maul was set but the Reds defended well earning a defensive scrum from where they exited well to the 10 yard line. After some midfield play the Reds earned a penalty on their own 22 which they took quickly gaining another 10 metres, they found touch just outside the 22 and put together a number of phases in the 22 but the visitors excellent defence held firm and a penalty at the ruck allowed Wivey to clear. Soon after from a scrum on the left 10 metres outside the 22 the Reds put together their best move of the day, the ball zipping along the line for Ben Rosevear to go over in Hellfire Corner for an unconverted try on 62 mins. If the Reds thought the game was all but over nobody had told Wivey, running a clearance back well they got to the Reds 22 and a series of well put together phases ended with Matt Ellis powering over under the posts for try converted by Charlie Sharland to make it 17-7 on 67 mins. After the visitors had knocked on from the restart the Reds were again on the attack. The first set of phases in the 22 ended with a Reds knock-on but a few minutes later they were back in the 22. Fielding a long clearance kick Rosevear kicked ahead and got the bounce of the ball to regain possession and take play to the edge of the 22 again though the chance was lost due to a knock-on. A penalty on the 10 metre was put into Hellfire Corner but yet again possession was fumbled to allow Wivey to clear. Soon after from a line out on the 22 the Reds went on the attack, Hosking made on outside break towards the famous corner and put the ball back inside to the on rushing Luke Young to take it at pace and go over wide out. Into the teeth of the wind Hosking was very unlucky to see his conversion drop just short. The result was now not in doubt with time running out, after some more Redruth possession in the visitors 22 ended when a drop-goal attempt went wide Wivey put together their best rugby of the day. Running the ball from their own line they played some great rugby with both backs and forwards involved and the move ended with William Thorne going over just to the right of the posts, Sharlands conversion being the last kick of the game.
In the windy conditions both sides should be congratulated on putting on such an entertaining match for the large crowd.
Next Saturday the Reds 2nds again take centre stage at the Recreation Ground when they take on St.Ives.
