In a game played in relatively calm conditions in typical Cornish mizzle there was a sense of relief and genuine delight that rugby was back after a nine month break. Redruth were delighted that Veor agreed to take on the fixture with Camborne unable to raise a 2nd team.
Veor kicked off attaching Hellfire Cornwall and were almost the first to score but a great tackle by R.Daughty saved the day. A J.Murray break for the Reds took play deep into the Veor 22. The Reds kept up the pressure and finally got over the line with a C.Richards try, converted by J.Murray. This was the start of a golden period for the Reds as they added 2 further trys in the space of 10 mins, firstly B.Rowe intercepted to go under the posts and then E.Cowley also went over by the posts. Both trys were converted by J.Murray and this made it 21-0 to the Reds after 21 mins at the water break.
The 2nd period was very even with both sides coming close. Eventually Veor kicked a penalty in the Reds 22 to set up a good attacking position. Their strong forward pack were not going to let the position slip and after 25 mins they went over near the posts for a converted try. Veor probably had the best of the remainder of the 1st half but were unable to add to their points tally.
Half-Time: Redruth 21 - 7 Veor
In the 2nd half Veor came out like a team who believed the game was not lost. Through their strong forwards they dominated possession but the absence of scrums and mauls definitely aided the younger, smaller Reds. One flowing Reds move looked to end in a certain try but Veor held out to clear their lines. On 51 mins Veor won a penalty and kicked to the Reds 10 yard line. The pressure told as they crashed over for a try well converted from wide out. On 67 mins Veor again added to their tally with another try again converted with a majestic kick from wide out. 21 all with only 13 mins left and all to play for. It was the young Reds however who would strike the vital blow with a well taken Penalty Kick stroked through the posts from fully 40 yards by L.Wills. Despite fierce Veor pressure the Reds held out to claim the win.
