Boxing Day, modified rugby, Covid rules and a new signing.

Hello all
I hope this finds you all safe and well and you are all looking forward to Christmas and New Year and with a vaccine now being rolled out with the hope of a return to a so called normal life!

It came as a real surprise when the Government and the RFU gave the go ahead to start playing rugby again. We are at stage E so we can start doing controlled contact now and start to play a game that looks something like rugby. Yes there will be no scrums or mauls but it’s a game that we can develop and enjoy and hopefully play a style that will be entertaining and good to watch. All our players will be involved as we feel it's important that we keep all our squad playing and enjoying their rugby. All are returning to training with a huge appetite to get back to playing rugby on Saturday afternoons.

We have entered 2 leagues, The National Clubs Cup Competition, which will involve us playing in a group of South West Clubs from National League 1 and 2. This will involve playing a league format before going into knockout stages. Also we have entered The Cornwall League which will see us compete with Camborne, Launceston, St Austell, Wadebridge and Penryn in a league style competition. We are waiting for some more rules and details and I’ll update you all as soon as I get those details.

As you will have all seen our 1st game of the season will be our traditional Boxing Day game with Camborne, with this year's game being held at Redruth with a 2pm kick off. It will be held under the new rules which will prove difficult for both sides but we feel it's a great opportunity to get back to some sort of normality. The 2s will play at Camborne in the morning and Colts playing at home, details of kick off will follow.
Staging a game in these times with the COVID restrictions is extremely challenging, trying to make sense of the rules and regs and making sure we are adhering to them is tough! We as a club are working extremely hard to make Boxing Day a success and an experience that is both enjoyable and safe for all involved. The aim of the club must be to make it successful and financially viable, end of the day we have to make money and keep the club open. Having to employ extra security, bar staff doing table service and limited space for seated people and a limited crowd means we have to make some decisions that won't be popular with some people but I can assure you we have thought it through and believe it's the best way forward for the club. Theresa is busy organising all the things that need doing and will keep you all up to date through our social media sites, so please keep an eye on those.
Hopefully people will understand this and fully support us and adhere to the rules that will be in place on the day, and make it a successful return to rugby, and set the club up for an exciting upcoming season. We are extremely fortunate to have a band of fantastic loyal supporters and an outstanding group of sponsors, so I’m confident we will be ok!

On the playing and coaching front Richie Kevern has stepped up to take on more responsibility on the coaching front, a role in which I know he'll excel! Lewis Thomas has returned to us from Camborne and has fitted in well and we welcome him back to Redruth, Lewis is the son of former Redruth favourite Kevin. He plays on the wing but can cover other positions if required.

So that's about it for me, apart from wishing you all a Happy Christmas and I hope to see you all on Boxing Day and we can enjoy a game of rugby and some Christmas cheer.
Nigel.
