Bishop's Stortford 32 Redruth 7
Bishop's get revenge for defeat at Redruth earlier on the season - Report by Ed Bawden
Bishop’s Stortford underlined their promotion credentials with some tremendous defence in the opening half hour before going on to a comprehensive win by five tries to one over the Reds.
Early in the game there was a long stoppage following an injury to the home skipper Tom Coleman who was injured stopping his Reds counterpart Kyle Marriott.
Redruth chose to play into a stiff breeze in the first half and gave the top of the table side plenty to think about, a yellow card for BJ Chapman just before the interval with the home side ten points ahead was a turning point, Stortford scoring two tries while the Reds were a man down to put the result beyond doubt early in the second half.
Conditions were good, Redruth dominated most of the first half hour but did not turn opportunities into points Referee Philip Davies was on the spot to rule skipper Kyle Marriott was held up over the line while on other occasions the home defence matched all that Redruth could throw at them.
The opening score was a 40 meter penalty by Tom Banks following a no arms tackle by Redruth.
With the interval fast approaching Redruth ran a free quick just outside the 22 and when they were turned over Stortford took their chance well for Will Simmonds to go over for a try that Banks converted.
On the stroke of half time Chapman was shown a yellow card after kicking the ball away after the home side were awarded a penalty near the Reds line. From the scrum that followed replacement fed Jimmy Rea who broke a weak tackle to go over in the right hand corner to give the home side a 15 point lead at the break.
Early in the second half Redruth were struggling to contain the free flowing play of the home side and after some good handling Will Roberts went over for a try that Banks converted.
It was all the home side at this stage and further good handling saw Rea go over for his second try in the corner to claim the bonus point after 55 minutes.
Coming on as a replacement Connor Gilbert who has come through the Redruth colts made his debut in the centre.
After Stortford hooker Declan Caulfield powered over for a fifth try after 67 minutes to open up a 32 point lead Redruth roused themselves in the final ten minutes.
Following three successive penalties to the reds Stortford flanker Dan Elsom picked up a yellow card and in the final play of the game Jack Oulton sold a subtle dummy to go over for a consolation score that Brett Rule converted.
A win at Chinnor next week will virtually guarantee Bishop’s Stortford promotion to national one after three near misses.
