This Saturday Redruth ford the mighty Red River to take on Camborne RFC.
I normally begin these previews by detailing the Reds travel arrangements, somewhat unnecessary this time, and despite rumours to the contrary Redruth will not be overnighting in the Travel Lodge at Tolvaddon!
It has been over 30 years since the Reds and Town locked horns at league level and to say that this match has created a bit of discussion locally would be understating things somewhat. The coaches of both clubs will no doubt insist that this is just one fixture in a season with 25 others but try telling that to the spectators!
This being only the 2nd game of the season there is little league form to go on but since when did league form matter in a local derby?
For the record last Saturday Camborne lost to Dings Crusaders at home by 17-27. Considering that Dings are touted to be one of the favourites to top the table this would seem to be a creditable result and was from reports an even affair with both sides scoring 3 tries.
Redruth for their part had an up and down match against Old Redcliffians. The first 35 mins were highly forgettable from a Redruth viewpoint as they went 21 points down. The next 45 mins however were excellent as the young Reds side found their feet and showed great character to run in 5 unanswered tries to win 28-21 and send their supporters home smiling.
Referee: Henry Pearson
Assistant Referees: Fred Spong & Mark Summerhayes.
Look out for teams news on Friday.
Saturday 9th September.
Redruth 2nds v Perranporth - Kick-off 3.00pm.
Referee: Ben Sanders- Crook.
The 2nds get their league season underway with a tough match against promoted Perranporth who had a 28-19 victory last Saturday against Newquay Hornets. The Reds game against Camborne School of Mines was postponed as the students had yet to return from their summer break and will be played later in the season.
