Sharp…Penberthy…Bonds…Just a few well known surnames you’ll hear whispered at the end of any bar this side of the Tamar amongst men deep in discussion about Redruth RFC ‘’legends’’.

We all know there is a huge list of RRFC legends, but for now lets talk about one in particular; one that wouldn’t modestly self proclaim to be one, but one that will be sure to appear in every bar discussion and banter for as long as time goes on….

Brett Rule, like most reds started out at Redruth RFC through the mini juniors, and went up the age groups all the while playing and captaining his school side. As he went about his business people knew he had a certain manner about him, he gained county honours and South West recognition before going on to be a valuable member of the most successful colts teams of all time, coached by Simon Blake (another reds legend, who’s given his life and soul to the club) and it wasn’t long before 1st team head coach Nigel Hambly’s eyes perked up after hearing and seeing Rule play at colt level. In turn, Hambly proceeded to hand the fly half his first team debut against Blackheath away at the tender age of 20.

To use an old cliché ‘’it isn’t the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog” still barely comes close to trying to encapsulate the fight, heart and desire in which Rule played with week in week out when he donned the very much sought after red shirt. A man not gifted with natural stature but who’s presence was felt when he played and missed when he didn’t, and most importantly of all, when Rule spoke, everyone around him listened.

A proud Red blazer wearer, and 166 first team caps later, a mammoth number of miles racked up travelling the length of the country, and after putting his body on the line time and time again for the love of the shirt and club, Rule has decided to call it a day on his decorated playing career. A decision that was not taken lightly, but one that was sadly, out of his hands, and upon revealing the news to his team mates, he added “there isn’t anything I would have changed about my time as a Red”.

Thank you for inspiring us all Brett, and for bringing a whole new meaning to 'playing for his red shirt with all his heart'. We look forward to your support off the field, and mostly, we all look forward to your long awaited WEDDING!
